Who We Are

  • The foundation was established in 1992 by Jim Ackerman, a local entrepreneur, and his wife, Lois Ackerman, who together were strongly committed to philanthropy and supporting their communities. Reflecting on the desire to build upon Jim and Lois’ legacy, the next generations continue to lead the foundation with the intent of making a positive impact on issues important to the Ackerman family.

  • Family, responsibility, community, innovation and impact are the foundational values that inform how we approach grantmaking and partnerships

  • The Ackerman Foundation strives to improve the vitality of central Indiana. We do this by supporting organizations that focus on bettering the lives of the underprivileged through the fostering of self-sufficiency; supporting initiatives that lead to great educational outcomes for all Hoosiers and supporting work to build and sustain local cultural and health institutions that make our community a vibrant place to live.

  • We envision a central Indiana community where all Hoosier youth and families have the opportunities and resources necessary to build a fulfilling life.
